Developing the Tourism Industry

Tourism Development
Facilitates the profitability and sustainability of existing tourism operations and the entry of new operators. Encourages the development of new destinations and tourism products by positioning land for tourism development, providing assistance with regulatory processes, encouraging a positive policy environment, and actively promoting tourism investment in Alberta.

Tourism Services
Operates the network of Travel Alberta Visitor Information Centres, manages the Travel Alberta Contact/Distribution Centre (1-800-Alberta) and administers the Tourism Information System that is the data source for the www.TravelAlberta.com website.

Marketing Alberta's Tourism Industry

Travel Alberta
The official destination marketing organization for Alberta is funded through a four per cent tourism levy on accommodations, Travel Alberta promotes the province as a tourist destination regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Parks and Recreation

Parks

The Alberta parks system covers 27,678 square kilometres. These parks preserve important ecological areas and provide places where people can enjoy and learn about Alberta's natural heritage.

Preservation and Outdoor Recreation
Preserving a network of parks and protected areas that represent the diversity of the province's natural and cultural heritage. A long-term commitment to preservation is balanced with the goal of providing Albertans with a variety of recreational and educational opportunities, including heritage tourism and appreciation of Alberta's natural heritage.

Recreation

Recreation and sport
Encouraging Albertans to lead active, healthy lives and building a reputation for athletic excellence are key goals of the ministry. Government collaborates with various associations, in the recreation and sport sector, and supports their work to promote participation in recreation and sport. Grant funding is also available to support the development and upgrading of recreation facilities throughout the province.

Funding Support

Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation
The foundation provides grant assistance to provincial recreation and sport organizations to assist with developing coaches, hosting and other programs. It also sponsors major athletic events, supports the development of active lifestyles and receives donations in support of land conservation and other programs.
