"A coach is one of the most influential people in a young
person's life. Coaches don't just teach how to hit a ball
or block a spike, but how to win and lose graciously. The
athletic skills young people learn from coaches may only apply
for a few years, but the attitudes they develop toward themselves
and others will last a lifetime."
What is NCCP?
The NCCP is Canada's recognized National Coaching
Certification Program. It was developed in 1974 to
provide quality training and certification to Canada's
coaches in more than 65 sports. The NCCP had moved to a competency-based approach where coaches are:
- Trained in NCCP outcomes relevant to the participants
that they are coaching
- Evaluated by demonstrating coaching outcomes to a
specified standard
Who am I coaching?
The new structure of the NCCP is based on the
participant's needs, which are identified within streams and
contexts:
| Community Sport Stream |
Competition

Instruction

| Initiation |

(Part A & B) |

PART A - Modules included in this package:
- Make Ethical Decisions
- Planning a Practice
- Nutrition
PART B - Modules included in this package:
- Design a Basic Sport Program
- Teaching and Learning
- Basic Mental Skills
COMPETITION - DEVELOPMENT
The NCCP Level 3 Theory has now officially been phased
out and is no longer available. Coaches are now
required to complete the Competition - Development modules
as outlined below.
Coaches beginning training in the NCCP Competition -
Development context should first consider completing training and/or
evaluation in the Planning a Practice, Design a Basic Sport
Program and Make Ethical Decisions modules in the NCCP.
These three modules serve as a necessary foundation for the
additional modules in this context.
Coaches wishing to complete all of the training in the
Competition - Development context will need to complete six
multi-sport modules and a number of sport specific modules.
The six modules are:
- Coaching and Leading Effectively
- Developing Athletic Abilities
- Leading Drug Free Sport
- Managing Conflict
- Prevention and Recovery
- Psychology of Performance
PLEASE NOTE:
For the Developing Athletic Abilities module, there is also
an 'on-line' component that coaches must complete before
attending the course. This will generally take an
additional 2 hours to complete prior to taking the module.
Completion of this on-line component is mandatory
before attending the course.
Contact your Provincial
Sport Association to find out what context is relevant
to you and what you need to do to get trained and achieve
accreditation.
How do I get certified?
Coaches can receive 3 types of accreditation in any of the streams and
contexts:
| In Training |
Trained |
Certified |
| Coach needs
to be trained in additional outcomes |
Coach
completed training on outcomes |
Coach has
been evaluated in outcomes and has signed the NCCP
Code of Conduct |
How much will it cost?
Each sport and province/territory determines their own
fee structure for the NCCP learning experiences.
Contact your Provincial Sport Association for details on the
sport specific coaching modules.
Competition - Introduction - Part A -
approximately $100.00 (13 hours)
Competition - Introduction - Part B - approximately
