A wide variety of programs are available for various ages, interests and physical abilities, including Bus Tours, Guided Hikes, Family Programs, and Dinosaur Digs. Reservations are very strongly advised. View our event descriptions, schedules, fees, and safety tips, or our important advice before your ticket purchase for more information. Displays Two outdoor fossil displays along the public loop road are accessible year-round, road conditions permitting. On weekends in July and August drop by the John Ware Cabin, and discover the legacy of Alberta’s most famous black cowboy. Trails Five self-guided interpretive trails allow visitors to explore the badlands, grasslands, and cottonwood environments. All trails are for pedestrian use only, with two trails wheelchair accessible. Bicycles are restricted to the park's paved and gravel roads. Please secure your bike in the racks located near all trailheads. Dinosaur Provincial Park's unique landscape is extremely susceptible to erosion. Please help us protect the park by staying on the formal trail surface. Wear sturdy footwear whenever hiking the trails. Prairie Trail Located at the park entrance viewpoint, this pathway loops through the often over-looked prairie grassland that is the outer fringe of the park. Discover the story of how animals and plants survive and thrive in their dry and windy home. Coulee Viewpoint Trail Starting in front of the Visitor Centre this trail climbs several metres up to a ridge viewpoint with spectacular views of Little Sandhill Coulee. The return leg of the trail winds through a section with deeply-carved rills, pipes and tunnels. Caution: This is a fair-weather trail only. Rock surfaces underfoot can become very slippery when wet. Due to the sharp drop-offs near the viewpoint, children should be supervised by adults. Badlands Trail Adjacent to the public loop road, this trail wanders among hoodoos and reveals the tale of how the badlands were formed. Caution: This is a fair-weather trail only. Rock surfaces underfoot can become very slippery when wet. Trail of the Fossil Hunters The trail begins next to Fossil Display #2 and leads to a 1913 quarry site. Re-live the excitement of spectacular discoveries as early fossil hunters from various museums competed for fame in the name of science. Cottonwood Flats Trail Explore a lush riverside world beneath the canopy of the cottonwoods. Bring your binoculars as the cool under-storey is home to most of the park’s 165 species of birds. The trailhead is on the public loop road near the Red Deer River.
Before You Purchase Your Tickets Tip 1: If you can, budget two full days to have an in-depth quality park experience. This allows a reasonably paced schedule, and gives access to a greater variety of programs. Remember, that '...any place that has been in the making for 75 million years is worth two days of your time to enjoy.' Tip 2: Especially in July and August demand for tickets often exceeds capacity, so be prepared to be flexible in your choice of times and events. Use our on-line bookings system, which shows how many tickets are left for each event before you choose. (embed link) Tip 3: Please respect the age limits that have been set for certain hikes. These have been developed for visitor safety and enjoyment after years of experience in serving the public. We offer a broad range of events for different age groups and physical abilities, so you please select age-appropriate activities for your group. Tip 4: Our mini-buses are designed for short-distance trips and do not have overhead luggage racks or washrooms. Please observe our policy for carry-on items and activities: Allowed: Day packs for binoculars, cameras and field guides; re-sealable water bottles; walking canes.
