Science Strategy

Updated: August 26, 2009

Delivering on the promise in the Plan for Parks to foster evidence-based decision-making and facilitate natural and social science research to inform park planning, management, and operations, the Parks Division has recently completed the Parks Division Science Strategy.

The Science Strategy was developed by Parks Division staff, building on input received from a broad spectrum of Alberta scientists from universities, federal and provincial government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

The Strategy documents the Division’s current practice to strive to increase the quantity and quality of natural, social and economic research being conducted in regard to parks.

Through improved communication with Alberta’s researchers, and improved management of scientific information, it will improve our capacity to make sound, defensible decisions in all aspects of our business.

By fostering collaboration with the research community we leverage maximum results (in terms of research quality and volume) from our valued partnerships and collaborations.

Scientific knowledge underpins several Guiding Principles outlined in the Plan for Parks, including: Accountability; Continuous Improvement and Innovation; Environmental Leadership; Integrated Management; Stewardship; and, Sustainability. The Parks Division Science Strategy was developed with this broad scope of application in mind; its implementation will make a positive contribution to the entire decision making framework provided in the Plan for Parks.
